Building Our Community Meshtastic Roof Node

Installing a permanent Meshtastic roof node is one of the best ways to improve coverage for everyone in the area. This project took us from planning and permissions all the way to getting the node safely mounted on the roof and on the air.

Below you'll find each step of the build, along with a quick introduction to Meshtastic if you're new to the project.

Enormous thank yous go out to Patrick, Jesse, and Lisa! I'm still not allowed to lift heavy things so without them this wouldn't have happened!

Step 1 & 2: Planning, Permission, and Supplies

Before climbing onto the roof, we made sure we had permission to install the node and gathered everything needed for the project. The Staunton Innovation Hub graciously let us put one on their roof!

Step 3: Building the Roof Node

With everything ready, it was time to assemble the roof node itself and prepare it for installation. I will say, in the future, I will not get the cheapest things I can find off of AliExpress or similar sites. Some sources for better quality supplies are Rokland and Seeed Studio.

Step 4: Testing the Antenna

Before putting anything on the roof, we verified that the antenna and node were working correctly. It's much easier to troubleshoot on the ground than after everything is installed.

Step 5: Getting the Node on the Roof

The exciting part! We carefully positioned the node where it would have the best coverage while keeping the installation secure and safe.

Step 6: Securing the Installation

Finally, we weighed everything down to help ensure the installation stays put through changing weather conditions.


What is Meshtastic?

If you're new here, Meshtastic is an open-source, off-grid messaging network that uses inexpensive LoRa radios to send text messages without relying on cellular service or the internet. Each node helps extend the network by relaying messages, creating a community-powered mesh.

Whether you're interested in emergency preparedness, hiking, camping, amateur radio, or just experimenting with wireless technology, Meshtastic is a fun and practical project that's growing rapidly around the world.

A roof node like the one in this project helps improve coverage for everyone nearby by creating a higher, more reliable relay point.


Why We're Excited About Meshtastic

One of our local members recently shared how they discovered Meshtastic and why they decided to get involved with the community.

Some projects we hope to experiment with are setting up an Airsoft event using ATAK, using potted plants to demo irrigation sensors and automatic watering for our farmer's market table, and getting the Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) equipped with some excellent new comms capabilities!

Speaking of community, we're incredibly proud to congratulate Lisa on recently earning her HAM license!

She recently participated in ARRL Field Day and was featured in our local newspaper. It's always exciting to see new operators getting involved and helping grow both the amateur radio and Meshtastic communities.
